CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Treme, New Orleans, Louisiana

“Good mornin’, Granmama, Tante Marie.” Matt waved as he and Natalia entered the room.

Marie motioned them to empty chairs at the table set with coffee cups and plates of breakfast foods.

Matt’s steps faltered when he saw Celine’s expression. A mix of disappointment and anger that he knew from experience would lead to a thorough tongue-lashing for whatever he’d done to earn it.

Natalia noticed the stutter in his step and put her hand on his arm in support.

“Good morning.” Natalia nodded.

“I trust you slept well, Natalia.”

“I did, Marie. I feel much better now.”

“Bien, sit, child. You still need to eat to regain your stamina.”

Matt’s head jerked up, and he turned to Natalia. “Cher. What’s wrong?”

“A minor glitch when I use offensive magic,” Natalia deflected.

“Minor.” Marie snorted. “Do not downplay the seriousness of the problem. It doesn’t change facts, and lying to yourself won’t help.”

“Natalia?” Matt pressed.

“If I try to perform more than one offensive spell, my magic drains, and I pass out. Marie thinks someone used mind magic on me to prevent my using those spells,” Natalia spat.

“Who? Why?” Matt stammered, then went silent.

“Probably one of my close relatives. Chauncey, on my mother’s orders, is the prime suspect.”

“Shoulda made it hurt when I killed his ass,” Matt grumbled.

“We can discuss that after both of you eat. Natalia isn’t the only one who pushed herself too hard yesterday,” Marie scolded.

Matt pulled out a chair for Natalia, who beamed at him as she sat.

“He’s pigheaded and stubborn at times, but you did raise him right, Celine.” Marie smiled.

“I tried.” Celine busied herself pouring sugar into her coffee, pointedly not looking at Matt.

“Granmama?”

Celine looked up with fire in her eyes, but Marie laid a hand on her arm before she could speak.

“Celine, we agreed they need to eat first. We can discuss this after.”

Celine pursed her lips and looked at Marie. Marie returned her gaze with a cool look.

“If it makes you feel better, you can yell at him all you want once we’re sure he won’t pass out again,” Marie offered.

“Hmpf.” Celine huffed.

Marie shook her head and turned to the two warily watching. “Eat now. We have all day to worry about what has Celine’s tail twisted in knots.”

“Oh, joy.” Matt sighed, wondering what he’d done to earn whatever Celine had in store for him.

“How you feelin’, boy? You gave me a hell of a scare yesterday.” Julien strode into the room, snagged a coffee cup from the service cart, and sat beside Celine.

“A little sore but otherwise pretty good, Uncle Julien. How’s Darrel?”

“He’s fine, Picou too.”

“Good to hear. Ramy okay too?”

Julien laughed and nodded. “Long as one of those swamp pixies don’ kill him. I hung around at Marty’s until he got in touch with da pixies. Five of da girls buzzed in like their butts were on fire ’bout ten minutes later.

“The little faker acted like he could barely lift his head, an’ those pixie girls were fawnin’ over him like a girl with a new kitten.
